Xalam is the name of a Senegalese musical group founded in 1969 founded by a group of friends. The band was originally called African Khalam Orchestra. The band takes its name from the lute-like instrument the xalam. The band included sax, drums, African percussion, bass and electric guitar.

Xalam is a prolific Senegalese band known for its own fusion of jazz, rock and African rhythms. Founded in 1965 by Sakhir Thiam (songwriter, guitarist, scholar and future President of the Dakar Bourguiba University), this first formation became known as Xalam I, After the group first disbanded, Ndiouga Kebe, a wealthy businessman, offered them to be the house band at his new nightclub, the Sahel, thus the band became known as l'Orchestre du Sahel.

Xalam continued touring throughout the world and were even featured in a Disney film about African music. In 1984 they were hired to record percussion trakes for the Rolling Stones album Undercover. Since then Xalam continue to excite audiences everywhere with their particular fusion of jazz and African music. Back to The African Music Encyclopedia: Music From Africa and the African Diaspora.
