Ode to Billie Joe is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry. In 2008, Australian label Raven Records released the album on CD, paired with 1969’s Touch 'Em with Love

Bobbie Gentry called all the shots, from producing her own records to staging pioneering live shows. Released in 1967, the influence of ‘Billie Joe’ was seismic. The song itself was widely and almost-immediately covered: The Supremes, Nancy Wilson, Tammy Wynette and Lou Donaldson all recorded versions within a year. Jeannie C Riley’s ‘Harper Valley PTA’, from 1968, mined similar themes of gossip and small-town hypocrisy, and seems a direct descendent of Bobbie’s Southern-baked storytelling. She even recorded an (unreleased) album of jazz standards. There seemed a bravery about Bobbie Gentry, a have-a-go spirit especially unusual given the straightjacket for female artists at the time.

People named Bobby Joe White.

Tony Joe White (July 23, 1943 – October 24, 2018), nicknamed the Swamp Fox, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie" and for "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970. He also wrote "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues", both hits for Tina Turner in 1989; those two songs came by way of Turner's producer at the time, Mark Knopfler, who was a friend of White

An album of hauntingly beautiful songs penned by Bobbie herself bar one track. The album is an uncluttered, straight down the line collection of smoky voiced gems, mostly with the simplest guitar accompaniment, but with a quirky, almost psychedelic twist on each track. There is a certain smoky quality that certainly personifies Bobby Gentry. One particular song really tugs at my heartstrings and that "Hurry Tuesday Child".

The Best of Tony Joe White. Twenty tracks from 1969-1973, the period of Tony Joe White's greatest success, including "Polk Salad Annie" and White's own version of his composition "Rainy Night in Georgia
