It Was Written is the second studio album by American rapper Nas, released July 2, 1996 on Columbia Records in the United States. Following the moderate sales success of his acclaimed debut album, Illmatic (1994), Nas chose to focus his efforts in a more mainstream direction. Primarily produced by Trackmasters, it is a departure for him from the raw, underground tone of his debut album towards a more polished, mainstream sound.

Following his critically acclaimed debut Illmatic, Nas returned with his sophomore album It Was Written. Despite the praise, Illmatic slowly reached platinum status, while Nas watched fellow New Yorker The Notorious . gain bigger success the same year with his debut Ready To Die-a balance of hardcore rhymes and a commercial sound courtesy of Puff Daddy. People may use the sales to support that claim, as It Was Written is Nas' highest selling album to date and it was certified triple platinum after debuting at on the Billboard 200. The album was supported by the singles Street Dreams (original version and remix with R. Kelly) and If I Ruled the World (Imagine That) with Lauryn Hill. It Was Written Q&A. How did this album chart? This album peaked at on Billboard’s US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the Billboard 200. Does this album have any certifications? Yes!

A new Nas album hits the shelves. The album that I believe is the greatest Hip Hop album ever. It holds a very special place in my heart. Nas was riding the high of a gold selling debut classic with Illmatic, and he would be enjoying the success that came with it. One story about this album that always sticks with me is the report that Nas was struggling with money during 1995 and had to take out a loan to make purchases for the Source Awards (mostly clothes and jewelry from what I have heard). Nas had developed expensive taste and his spending habits became an issue. All in all, It Was Written is not only Nas’ best album, but it’s his most well-rounded album as well. 20 years later, Nas has grown considerably, put out more classics, and shown much more depth and imagery in his lyrics, but this remains the upper echelon standard in his catalog. Salute to Nas and to this album.

It Was Written debuted to astronomical success, selling more than 260,000 records in its first week, beating out many of Nas' peers in the hip-hop genre, most notably his future adversary (turned respected peer) Jay Z, who dropped his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, a week before on June 25. However, Nas' commercial success led to a mix of criticism from hip-hop heads, especially ones who worshipped his holy street text Illmatic. Journalist Kris Ex voiced his slight displeasure with It Was Written in comparison to his famed debut in a Sept.

By the time It Was Written was released Nas was being heralded as the best MC in modern rap music after only one album. Illmatic was Nass masterpiece, thoughtful, heartbreaking and powerful as well as raw and scary. It Was Written was a turn in the wrong direction, but the right way in the wrong direction (if this makes any sense). The album is full of classic cuts, but the grime lacing every beat on his first album was gone. The lyrics were there, but some of the emotion was gone

I A. s the third studio album by American rapper Nas, released on April 6, 1999 by Columbia Records. Following the commercial and critical success of 1996's It Was Written, Nas put to work on a double album that merged the styles of his first two albums and detailed entire aspects of his life.

It Was Written is loaded with lyrics so intricate, you can envision them scribbled in shabby composition books. The result is an album that plays out like a panoramic shot of both the circa-’90s projects and the mind of a brilliant storyteller. Tales like The Message and Street Dreams are as rough as they are reflective, but Nas still has a way of casually breezing over beats-whether he’s observing the war zone from inside or, on If I Ruled the World, dreaming of a way out.
