The original Ska-talites band only stayed together for a couple of years, but they laid a mighty foundation. First released in 1964 on coloured vinyl, the original Ska Authentic album (on ND Records, Studio One’s parent label) is one of the rarest albums in the entire Studio One catalog. The LP was followed by Ska Authentic Volume 2, a 1965 compilation with similar artwork to the 1964 LP, also released on ND Records. These were followed in 1967 by the The Ska-talites’ Ska Authentic on Studio One using the same graphics
The original Ska Authentic LP was released in 1964 and after the first pressing sold out it was not reissued, becoming one of the rarest albums in the catalog. In 1967, an English version of the album was released, but bore little resemblance to the original 1964 Jamaican release, sharing only two songs. The English version is distinguished by the orange box around Authentic, a redesigned back cover, and the red and white hanging mic label. This album was basically a Skatalites affair and became the version that was reissued for over thirty years. In the mid-1990s, a new version of the album was released, sharing tracks from both earlier issues as well as adding four new tracks.

The Skatalites are a ska band from Jamaica. They played initially between 1963 and 1965, and recorded many of their best known songs in the period, including "Guns of Navarone. They also played on records by Prince Buster and backed many other Jamaican artists who recorded during that period. They reformed in 1983 and have played together ever since.
For collectors of original ska long-players, Ska Authentic has always been the most confusing and elusive prize. Thankfully, Yep Roc Records has finally restored the original Ska Authentic for a high-quality reissue that allows us to appreciate the excellence of the initial album. David Katz, MOJO Magazine.
