The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (founded 1972) is a classical music chamber orchestra based in New York City. They have won several Grammy Awards. It is known for its collaborative leadership style in which the musicians, not a conductor, interpret the score. Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1972 by Julian Fifer and a group of young musicians.
Joining Marsalis on Creation is the conductorless American chamber orchestra Orpheus in performances of music by early 20th-century French composers, works that resonate with the then-new phenomenon of American jazz. Marsalis’ new recording attests to the range and ambition of his restless talent, which has made him, raved Wes Phillips of onhifi. com, "an innovative jazz saxophonist who also happens to be a classical performer with phenomenal technique. Creation presents a rare opportunity for Marsalis to step into the spotlight in the classical repertoire. Branford Marsalis won his first Grammy in 1993 for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group, for his album I Heard You Twice the First Time, and another in 1994 (Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Barcelona Mona," a single he recorded with Bruce Hornsby for the Olympics in Spain.

Creation (Branford Marsalis album). Creation is a classical music album by Branford Marsalis with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Focused on 20th century French classical music, this second classical album from Marsalis, coming 15 years after his earlier Romances for Saxophone, was recorded March 9 – 11, 2000 at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City.
Branford Marsalis' second classical album - released a yawning 15 years after his first - is a far more successful project than its predecessor, dwelling entirely within the world of French music of the 20th century. Thankfully, Marsalis doesn't have to rely too heavily upon transcriptions this time, choosing interesting, stimulating, often jazz-influenced works with a genuine saxophone part, and he has the expert backing of New York City's Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, who doesn't use a conductor and doesn't need one. For Marsalis' fans, this album is also a rare.

The first thing I notice in listening to Creation, Branford Marsalis's new album of classical music arranged for the saxophone and chamber orchestra, is his incredible tone. I've long thought Marsalis was a superior musician. Like many pop/rock fans (which I was once upon a time), I first became aware of him when he was a founding member of Sting's first post-Police band. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is a 27-piece group that performs without conductor, reaching their creative decisions by collaboration. It's not improvisation, but it has more in common with that than we expect from classical music. In performance, the musicians do allow each other space for spontaneous solos.
