Actually, William Harris had originally recorded 14 selections but five were unable to be located for this CD; one would later be rediscovered and reissued on a sampler. With the exception of "I'm Leavin' Town," Harris is heard performing solo and, despite his obscurity, he was a fine second-level blues and folksong performer. Buddy Boy Hawkins ' 12 solos from 1927-1929 find him performing in a similar vein and at a slightly higher level. His "Voice Throwin' Blues" (which over "Hesitatin' Blues" finds Hawkins having a call and response between two of his voices, including one allegedly being a ventriloquist's dummy) is a bit odd.

Hornsby appeared usually in the role of city slicker, judge or sheriff, on 28 August 1928 a building collapsed in Shelby, North Carolina killing six people and injuring twice as many. Hornsby composed a song title Shelby Disaster, Let the tears of remembrance, flow gently, full and free, Let all who read my story.

The Skillet Lickers were one of the most important old time string bands to record. He won the state fiddling championship in 1928. Tanner was known among musicians and convention audiences as a crowd pleaser. He was not only a fiddler but also a comedian noted for his stereotypical imitations and a singer with legendary range. Tanner allegedly knew the words and music to more than 2,000 songs. In addition to traditional folk music, fiddle tunes, and novelty songs, the Skillet Lickers recorded a series of skits in which humorous dialogue, interspersed with snatches of familiar songs and tunes, was the main feature.
