An Ideal for Living is the first EP by the English post-punk band Joy Division. It was released in 1978 by the band's own label, Enigma, shortly after the group changed its name from Warsaw. All tracks were recorded at Pennine Sound Studios in Oldham on 14 December 1977. The recording sessions were self-financed by the band, on a budget of £400. The release reflects the band's early punk influences, as opposed to the post-punk style they later developed.

Listen free to Joy Division – An Ideal for Living (Warsaw, No Love Lost and more). An Ideal for Living is the debut EP released by Joy Division in 1978, shortly after changing their name from Warsaw. All tracks were recorded at the Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham, on 14 December 1977. A 7" version was released in June on the band's own Enigma Records label (not to be confused with the American record label of the same name), followed by a 12" version in October on the band's own Anonymous Records label.

Complete your Joy Division collection. Leaders Of Men. Failures.

Joy Division's first release showcases clearly the group's punk roots. Warsaw" is classic rushed hardcore complete with shouted vocals, while "Failures" simply slows the tempo a bit to become a punk-influenced hard-rock number. No Love Lost" is almost an instrumental selection, with very late-entering vocals that seem like an afterthought. Most indicative of the group's later releases is the slower-tempo "Leaders of Men," which allows Ian Curtis' bleak lyrics to come to the fore

Joy Division made their recorded debut in June 1978 when the band self-released An Ideal for Living, and two weeks later their track "At a Later Date" was featured on the compilation album Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Circus (which had been recorded live in October 1977). No introductions, no promotion. Curtis would often perform what became known as his "'dead fly' dance", as if imitating a seizure; his arms would "start flying in semicircular, hypnotic curve". Simon Reynolds noted that Curtis's dancing style was reminiscent of an epileptic fit, and that he was dancing in the manner for some months before he was. diagnosed with epilepsy. Live performances became problematic for Joy Division, due to Curtis's condition.

In 1978, right after Joy Division dropped its original name, Warsaw, they released an EP called An Ideal for Living. The record has been bootlegged over the years, and now a "re-imagined" version will be out on April 19 for Record Store Day via Rhino. The music was newly mastered at London's Abbey Road Studios in January, by the band's longtime engineer Frank Arkwright. The artwork is inspired by the 12" version of the release, which featured an image of scaffolding.
