When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog Lyrics. Everyday make a fine loaf of bread And after work just before sunset You hang down to the city park There you're alone with the burbs in the dark And I've seen other people do that too But they're older than your twenty-two They lost hope and soon they'll be gone They'll just vanish with the setting. Record Label(s): 2004 Secretly Canadian.
If When I Said sounds like a bunch of shut-in, lily-livered whinging, well, it is, but he undercuts his own whining by skewering himself at every turn. The warbly acapella number Do You Remember the Riots? has him pulled along by an activist girlfriend to the Iraq War protests in 2001. It’s much more empathetic than it first seems with Lekman trying to explain If I’d be your psychologist, who would be the psychologist’s psychologist? But he’s not above completely debasing himself on the altar of love. Lisa would show up again, her self-determination closing out his most recent album Life Will See You Now, where he samples Happy Birthday and gets a part-time gig as a wedding singer (no word on if he’s practiced self-mutilation at any of those things). In fact, the only thing that Lekman didn’t seem to predict was his own startling but well-earned success. You’re oh-so-dramatic (and amazing) Jens.
Although Lekman is present in all of the songs on Life Will See You Now, it’s sometimes as a listener or spectator, rather than solely as the central active figure. Male characters get more of the spotlight than before. Jens Lekman describes his new record playfully, but also honestly, as a thirties-crisis disco album; it’s an existentialist record, about seeing the consequences of your choices. Across three studio albums, the Swedish singer/songwriter and musician has proven not only his flair for telling very personal stories with a sharp self-awareness, but also his skill for balancing depth of emotional expression with droll and often self-deprecating detail. It’s a winning pop combination. When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog. Sep 2004.
