Joaquín Rodrigo, José Ferrero , Marco Socías - Rodrigo: Songs with Guitar Accompaniment download mp3 album
Here you find a mixture of Rodrigo songs for voice and guitar with Socías' arrangements of voice-and-piano songs (or orchestra, in one case involving the central movement of the Concierto de Aranjuez). These arrangements come with a seal of approval from Rodrigo's daughter. A title like "Songs and Arrangements for Voice and Guitar" might have been helpful. Sample the limpid Folías canarias for a lovely representative of the latter type (in general, it is these that will appeal most to lovers of Rodrigo's big orchestral crowd-pleasers), and the title track, an early Rodrigo song for soprano and orchestra remade here for guitar, in the former category.

Guitarist Marco Socías has transcribed this collection of Joaquín Rodrigo's songs for guitar and voice, all recorded for the first time with the approval of the composer’s daughter. Tenor José Ferrero joins Socías on these pieces that span 60 years of Rodrigo's career, covering a rich stylistic range that includes traditional and folk influenced pieces and carols as well as the lyric intimacy of the settings of Con Antonio Machado.
Rodrigo wants the phrases to tell, reflectively, which means that interpretation has to move beyond the beauties of sound. A notable feature of Rodrigo’s approach to song is the variety of verse sources, but also a humility towards the original poetry. One senses the subordination to meaning – the verse is not, as with some composers, simply a vehicle for virtuosity. Many of the songs were originally written for other instruments (those asterisked), but they have been arranged, with the approval of the composer’s daughter, by Marco Socías. The new accompaniments work very well, capturing the essence of Rodrigo’s idiom. Overall, then, this is a fine recording, well worth investigating.
