Endless Scroll by BODEGA, released 06 July 2018 1. How Did This Happen?! 2. Bodega Birth 3. Name Escape 4. Boxes For the Move 5. I Am Not A Cinephile 6. Can't Knock The Hustle 7. Gyrate 8. Jack In Titanic 9. Margot 10. Bookmarks 11. Warhol 12. Charlie 13. Williamsburg Bridge 14. Truth Is Not Punishment. James Rascal One of the most exciting bands to come along in ages. Can't stop listening to this album. Will be in my top 3 of 2018 come the end of the year no doubt.

The album was recorded and produced by Austin Brown from Parquet Courts and although the influence and comparisons are clear to see, what Bodega have created is something that feels altogether both familiar and current at the same time. Endless Scroll’ is a record filled with potential and a perfect snapshot of what’s still to come.

The album is produced by Austin Brown on the same tape machine Parquet Courts used to record Light Up Gold, and that's a good starting point for reference.

Endless Scroll’ is primarily another satirical critique on this evergreen theme, and the quintet trek through 14 short-lived guitar tracks that unfortunately don’t quite match up to the vitality of their effervescent shows. Seeing Bodega live is like an assault. Loud and raucous, the band boil over with anger and primal frustration. Guitarist Madison Velding-VanDam trades in frenzied stares, while the battling vocals between Nikki Belfiglio, who also beats a hi-hat with hostile vigour, and Ben Hozie recall some kind of protest march. It’s a mix of infectious energy and razor-sharp tightness.

Overall, Endless Scroll feels self-righteous and misses the crucial idea that insurrection can actually be fu. .

Bodega – Endless Scroll. Self-aware, Brooklyn-based art punks Bodega come on strong with their debut album Endless Scroll. Recorded and produced by Parquet Courts’ Austin Brown on the same Tascam 388 used for his own band’s debut Light Up Gold, it’s jam-packed with superb bass hooks, marched out one after the other on the three opening tracks. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

Most clearly, Endless Scroll can be tied together by themes of a claustrophobic digital age. It’s present in the album’s title and the computerized voice that introduces the opening track and returns on Bookmarks with the detached interjection I touch myself while staring at your text chat box. That almost sarcastic post-modern wit is central to the lyricism throughout as well. Particularly given the spoken inflection of the vocals and often repetitive rhythmic backing, Bodega likely takes more influence from hip-hop than the funk that inspired many early post-punk acts. Elsewhere, the band dabbles with dancey punk (the Belfiglio-fronted Gyrate ), Velvet Underground malaise ( Charlie ), and noisy guitar rock ( Truth Is Not Punishment ). The fact that Austin Brown of the similarly punk band Parquet Courts produced the album is likely no coincidence.

Notes

Limited teal vinyl available from BODEGA, What's Your Rupture?, and indie retail.
It seems that some teal vinyl versions have the same sticker than the regular black vinyl version (sentence under the title is "includes digital download" instead of "Limited Edition Teal Vinyl", and barcode is 858053006193 instead of 858053006230).

Vinyl is a DR=10 (CD=6). Never very keen on coloured vinyl, this has quite a bit of surface noise and crackle, straight out of the shrinkwrap. I cleaned with isopropyl alcohol before first play but crackle and pop still present.

This version also comes with a booklet. Does anyone have it?
  • Eayaroler
Yes the booklet is a nice touch and its a great album
  • Altad
Yeah, mine has the booklet. It's quite elaborate, about 20 pages, with drawings and the lyrics.
  • thrust
I do, it's really well made. I just read along with the record. Great stuff.
