Shirley Horn's tribute to Ray Charles is typically idiosyncratic yet unaffected by a need to justify the critical hype. She plays organ as well as piano while Charles Ables doubles on bass and guitar and Gary Bartz adds soulful alto-sax obliggatos. Horn's versions of "Hit the Road, Jack" and "I Got a Man" replace the gospel fire of the originals with sexy, lighthearted swing, while "Drown in My Own Tears" is more torch ballad than bluesy hymn. The album's emotional centerpiece is "Green (It's Not Easy Being Green)," a tune Brother Ray borrowed from Kermit the Frog.

Light Out of Darkness (A Tribute to Ray Charles). Redirected from Light out of Darkness). Light Out of Darkness (A Tribute to Ray Charles) is a 1993 studio album by Shirley Horn, recorded in tribute to Ray Charles.

Shirley Horn was born and raised in Washington, . Encouraged by her grandmother, an amateur organist, Horn began piano lessons at the age of four. Aged 12, she studied piano and composition at Howard University, later graduating from there in classical music. Horn was offered a place at the Juilliard School, but her family could not afford to send. She made one album in 1972 for Perception Records, but the record received little notice, and Horn did not tour to promote it. In 1978, Horn's career got a boost when SteepleChase Records of Denmark tracked her down in Washington, . and offered to record her with drummer Billy Hart, (whom Horn had known for many years) and bassist Buster Williams. 1993: Light Out of Darkness (A Tribute to Ray Charles) (Verve). 1994: I Love You, Paris (Verve, live). 1994: Live at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival (Verve, live, released 2008).

For this change of pace, singer/pianist Shirley Horn performs 15 songs associated with Ray Charles. Of course, Horn sounds nothing like Charles, but she sometimes captures his spirit on such songs as "Hit the Road, Jack," "You Don't Know Me" (which finds her switching to organ), "Makin' Whoopee" and "How Long Has This Been Going O. Joined by her regular trio (with bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Willliams), some of the songs have Ables switching effectively to guitar, while Tyler Mitchell fills in on bass
