Green on Red followed the Dream Syndicate onto Slash Records, which released the album Gravity Talks in the fall of 1983. A major-label deal with Phonogram/Mercury followed, with the 7-song EP No Free Lunch released in summer 1986. A strong country music direction was evident, which music critic Ira Robbins remarked "should finally erase the group's original misassociation with the dreaded paisley underground". The album The Killer Inside Me came next, produced by Jim Dickinson at Ardent Studios. Post Green on Red, Stuart recorded the album Retronuevo with Al Perry in 1993, and solo effort Can O'Worms in 1995, and then essentially quit the music business; Prophet maintains a career as a solo artist and semi-celebrity sideman.

on Red tackled more effectively in the past, and the album's darker tone often feels forced, without the faint hope of redemption that made "Gas Food Lodging" so powerful.
Green on Red's "No Free Lunch" has the necessary k charm to qualify as a mid-nineties alt-country "hit. The band also has a nice sense of humour to boot - which is something too often missing from more recent "alt-country" offerings. been trying to find this album for years. fantastic just love the old willie nelson track, love to know what he thinks. 2 people found this helpful.
No Free Lunch is a US-based advocacy organization that holds that marketing methods employed by drug companies influence the way doctors and other healthcare providers prescribe medications. The group does outreach to convince physicians to refuse to accept gifts, money, or hospitality from pharmaceutical companies because it claims that these gifts create a conflict of interest for providers. Green on Red followed the Dream Syndicate onto Slash Records, which released the album Gravity Talks in the fall of 1983. San Francisco-based guitarist Chuck Prophet joined for the 1985 Gas Food Lodging (Enigma), after which MacNicol was replaced on drums by Keith Mitchell (later of Mazzy Star). In 2006 'Gas' was performed live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series.
Green on Red was an American rock band, formed in the Tucson,Arizona punk scene, but based for most of its career in Los Angeles, California, where it was loosely associated with the Paisley Underground.
In short, they're two records of no small interest to Green on Red fans, but they make rather odd bedfellows in this matchup - Gas Food Lodging would have made more sense alongside the No Free Lunch EP, while Green on Red would sit better with the Gravity Talks album, but licensing being what it is, this is the pairing Restless. Unfortunately, the Green on Red EP appears to have been salvaged from damaged tapes, with noticeable noise and occasional audio drop-outs; given its rarity, it's still a nice bonus, but the fidelity makes it sound all the more deficient compared to Gas Food Lodging. Then again, if you program out the Green on Red tracks, you're left with one of the best albums to come out of the '80s paisley underground scene, and that's no small thing.
