Nikolai Lugansky's 2018 release on Harmonia Mundi of Rachmaninov's 24 Preludes consists of the two sets of the Preludes, Op. 23 and the Preludes, Op. 32, but opens with the most famous (or infamous) of all of his solo keyboard pieces, the Prelude in C sharp minor.

Album · 2018 · 24 Songs. These 24 preludes offer the player a wonderful opportunity to explore so many textures at the keyboard, and Lugansky is at his finest in the ones where a gorgeous melody is floated over a rippling bassline. This is very elegant playing by someone who has lived long with this music.

The great Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, (Rachmaninov in the UK), sought to master the art of brevity by saying what we have to say without digression and with clarity. Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky more than meets the challenge of these 24 sparkling gems for solo piano. The 24 Preludes are pieces of boundless invention and fearsome technical demands.

Info for Rachmaninov: 24 Preludes. Rachmaninoff took the genre of the prelude to its highest degree of perfection with his boundless musical invention and fearsome technical demands. In his first recording for harmonia mundi, Nikolai Lugansky brilliantly meets the challenge, offering a programme of the finest gems in his repertory of choice. A summit of pianistic wizardry! Nikolai Lugansky regularly works with top level conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, Yuri Temirkanov, Mikhail Pletnev, Charles Dutoit, Gianandrea Noseda and Vladimir Jurowski

Nikolai Lugansky is an exemplar of the Russian Piano School; his impeccable pedigree includes study with the legendary Tatiana Nikolayeva and Sergei Dorensky, both able to trace a lineage back through Ginzberg, Goldenweiser and Siloti to Liszt. Despite a formidable career in the concert hall, his discography has been an uneven affair veering between major and boutique labels – I suspect the less compelling releases lacked a firm hand on the tiller; it takes an experienced producer to challenge and prod an artist for that elusive take to keep for posterity.
