Twelve concerti grossi, Op. 6, is a collection of twelve concerti written by Arcangelo Corelli, arranged for publication in 1714. These are some of the finest examples of the baroque-style concerti grossi, that is, concertos for a concertino group, in these cases of a 1st violin, a 2nd violin and a cello, and a ripieno group of 1st violins, 2nd violins, violas, cellos and continuo.

Arcangelo Corelli (/kɔːˈrɛli/; 17 February 1653 – 8 January 1713) was an Italian violinist and composer of the Baroque era. His music was key in the development of the modern genres of sonata and concerto, in establishing the preeminence of the violin, and as the first coalescing of modern tonality and functional harmony. Baptismal records indicate that Corelli was born on 17 February 1653 in the small Romagna town of Fusignano, then in the diocese of Ferrara, Papal States

It's with this background in mind so many people who had prior experience with the Avison Ensemble and Linn Records were so excited to hear of their new Corelli recording cycle project. And the excitement was found to be completely warranted: this first recording of Corelli's opus 6 Concerti Grossi is every bit as wonderful as the earlier works by the Ensemble. Corelli's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 are sublime works. However, like many recorded works from this era, they have suffered from poor recording quality and performances that place more emphasis on a dispassionate academic reading than on interpretations that draw on the passion and vitality of this music.
