Cornel Campbell, The City Slickers - Old King Cole / My Treasure download mp3 album
Cornel Campbell aka Don Cornel or Don Gorgon (born 23 November 1945 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer, best known for his trademark falsetto voice, and his recordings at Studio One in the late 1960s and his later work with Bunny Lee in the 1970s. Cornel has one of the sweetest falsettos of any Jamaican vocalist and uses it often to convey frustration, soul or despair.
Old King Cole" is a British nursery rhyme first attested in 1708. Though there is much speculation about the identity of King Cole, it is unlikely that he can be identified reliably as any historical figure. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 1164. The poem describes a merry king who called for his pipe, bowl, and musicians, with the details varying among versions. The "bowl" is a drinking vessel, while the "pipe" may be either a musical instrument or a pipe for smoking tobacco.

Play album Cornell, or Cornel, Campbell started recording in 1956, cutting shuffle and early ska tunes like "My Treasure" and "Don't Want Your Loving" at the ubiquitous Studio One for Coxsone Dodd. His singing style is delicate and ephemeral, making heavy use of falsetto. His sister, Cecille Campbell, also sang at Studio One and was a member of the Soulettes with Rita Marley.
The answers to these important questions are revealed in Ken Campbell’s reimagining of the familiar Old King Cole story. Additional Information.
