Bach, Leonard Rose, Glenn Gould ‎– Bach: The Three Sonatas For Viola Da Gamba And Harpsichord. Label: Columbia Masterworks ‎– M 32934. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Stereo. Country: US. Released: 1974.

Bach's gamba sonatas, heard in modern times more frequently on the cello, usually focus on the gamba/cello part. With a big name like Leonard Rose on cello, it would be hard for this not to be true. Unless of course the individual playing the harpsichord/piano part was Glenn Gould. This 1974 recording of Rose and Gould is, appropriately, all about Gould's Bach sensibilities and interpretations, with Rose following his lead.

Gould maintained a longstanding friendship with the cellist Leonard Rose ever since they and the violinist Oscar Shumsky were made musical directors of Canada’s Stratford Festival in 1956. In this particular case, I was very amenable to trying to please Glenn stylistically. I did not feel that at that time I was as well acquainted with the music as was Glenn. Glenn Gould could not have timed his professional entrance to the recording studio any better than with his première recording in 1955.

The sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, BWV 1027–1029, are three sonatas composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Although the dating of Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and cembalo has presented problems for musicologists, because only an autograph score of the first sonata BWV 1027 survives, there is now general consensus that the works were written in Leipzig at some time in the late 1730s and early 1740s.

Most of the recordings I have heard of the sonatas for Harpsicord and Violin use a Harpsicord not a piano. One of the things that happens is that the harpsicord tends to get "lost" as the violin is such a more powerfull instrument. Here the roles of both are equall and the pianist (Glen Gould) is a strong personality that makes himself felt in the music. The interaction between Gould and Laredo is electric. Both formidable artist together they create fireworks
