The Bar-Kays are among the most underrated funk groups of all the time, particularly their Stax period, the best of which is compiled here. Strangely, this collection doesn't include their first and biggest hit, Soul Finger, but the omission isn't a problem. One of the key elements in even the most superficial enjoyment of the Bar Kays is usually a feeling of mild frustration. Here we have a band that were probably the most overall instrumentally talented and ambitious bands in Stax's history. They were in terms of sound and image the labels equivalent to Funkadelic actually-blending the instrumentally cleaner sound of soul/funk with furious, noisy rock riffing.
Soul Finger is the debut album of the Bar-Kays, issued three months after the single of the same name. It was recorded by Tom Dowd and Chris Huston on Friday, June 23, 1967, at the Stax studio in Memphis.
