This 4 CD collection offers an awful lot of bang for your bucks -100 tracks over 257 minutes for less than the price of a pint! So what do we get? Most compilations have a theme which is usually a musical genre or a particular period but this one is a more eclectic beast: two CD's of songs about cars, trucks, hot rods, drag races, hitch-hiking and road travel in general and two CD's of songs about trains and railroad travel (actually, the last five songs on the final CD are back to cars again -maybe they ran out of train songs?)Genres covered include rock'n'roll, country and western, jazz, rhythm'n'blues, folk, skiffle, boogie-woogie, hillbilly, rockabilly and blues and the period covered is 1939 - 1955 with the majority of the songs coming from the early 50's. Virtually all the songs were originally US single releases for US artists and most of them were some sort of hit back in the day. There's quite a few well-known names here like Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Tennessee Ernie Ford or Bill Haley but there's also many less familiar artists, some "one hit wonders", some original versions of songs which were bigger hits for others later and a couple of complete obscurities. In spite of (or perhaps because of) the sequencing jumping backwards and forwards in time and merrily hopping across genres, the whole effect is really rather fun. The fact that every single song was considered good enough to be a single, aiming to get played on the radio and be a hit (as most were) virtually guarantees a lively atmosphere throughout and the common subject matter of travel and movement is generally interpreted musically in an equally upbeat manner. The packaging takes the form of a oversize digi-pack (twice the normal height) with the 48-page booklet glued onto the inside of the front flap and then the four CD's, two on each panel in individual trays. The booklet is in German first and then repeats the same information in English, with details of each song's original release and a short paragraph about the artist.Pleasingly, only two of the fourteen songs on this compilation which include the word "boogie" in the title are also to be found on the same company's excellent 4-CD box set, "Rhythm'N'Blues Boogie Woogie Goodies", which I also recommend. However, be warned that a whopping 36 of the 45 songs about trains also appear on Membran's 10-CD box set "Train Songs -200 Great Songs About Railroad Heroes, Hobos And Freight Trains" -if trains are your main thing, you might as well splash out on that one instead! Here is a full track listing:Disc 1: Cars I1: Arkie Shibley, "Hot Rod Race" (Gilt-Edge 502, 1951)2: Bill Haley & The Comets, "Rocket 88" (Holiday 105, 1951)3: Merrill Moore, "Hardtop Race" (Capitol 3226, 1955)4: Luke McDaniel, "Drive On" (King 1247, 1953)5: Paul Westmoreland, "Hot Rod Rag" (4-Star 1651, 1955)6: Johnny Tyler & The Riders Of The Rio Grande, "Devils' Hot Rod" (Ekko 1000, 1955)7: Bob Newman, "Lonesome Truck Driver's Blues" (King 945, 1951)8: Eddie Marshall, "Mobiling Baby Of Mine" (RCA 47-4661, 1952)9: Bob Wills, "Cadillac In Model 'A'" (MGM 11883, 1953)10: Joe Franklin, "Hitch-Hikin' Blues" (MGM 11612, 1953)11: Sleepy McDaniel, "Roadside Rag" (DC 8039, 1952)12: Arkie Shibley, "Hot Rod Race No.2" (Gilt-Edge 5030, 1951)13:Johnny Collett, "Four Alarm Boogie" (Arcade 106, 1952)14: Cliff Bruner, "Truck Driver's Blues" (Decca 5725, 1939)15: Red Foley & Ernest Tubb, "It's The Mileage That's Slowin' Us Down" (Decca 29195, 1954)16: Jimmy Boyd, "Truck Driver's Boogie" (RCA 21-0152, 1952)17: Billy Strange, "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves" (Capitol 2032, 1952)18: Jimmy Heap, "Ethyl In My Gas Tank" (Capitol 2866, 1954)19: Billy Jack Wills, "Slow Drive" (KFBK Transciption, 1953)20: Bob Williams, "Pick-Up Truck" (Tennessee 770, 1950)21: Tillman Franks, "Hot Rod Shotgun Boogie No.2" (Gotham 412, 1951)22: The Carlisles, "Woman Driver" (Mercury 6403, 1954)23: T.Texas Tyler, "Hot Rod Rag" (Decca 29007, 1953)24: Wade Ray, "Idaho Red" (RCA 47-5624, 1954)25: Arkie Shibley, "Hot Rod Race No.3" (Gilt-Edge 5036, 1951)Disc 2: Cars II1: Arkie Shibley, "Hot Rod Race No.4" (Gilt-Edge 5047, 1951)2: Cowboy Sam Nichols, "Keep Your Motor Hot" (MGM 10440, 1949)3: George Stogner, "Stock Car Boogie" (DeLuxe 2000, 1953)4: Luke McDaniel, "The Automobile Song" (King 1338, 1954)5: Murl Alexander & The Texas Wranglers, "Old Jalopy Bounce" (Dome 1022, 1953)6: Tex Williams, "Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon?"
