Musically and emotionally, Departing is a worthy companion to the Rural Alberta Advantage’s stellar 2008 debut, Hometowns. The songs still touch on the frustrations and desperation of small-town life, but this time things are more personal than general, the aches and angst pinpointed to specific relationships rather than to a place. Beginning with a pair of forlorn gems in Two Lovers and The Breakup, the album flows smoothly across its 10 taut tunes in just over 30 minutes. The pace picks up with the skittering rhythms of Under the Knife and Muscle Relaxants, then moves to the catharsis of the urgent and galloping Stamp, the soaring Tornado ’87, and the brief and punchy Barnes’ Yard, before ending with the heartbreakingly lovely and sparse Good Night. Departing The Rural Alberta Advantage.

The Rural Alberta Advantage is a Canadian indie rock band that formed in 2005 in Toronto. The band consists of Nils Edenloff on lead vocals and guitar, Amy Cole (Robin Hatch between September 2016 and January 2018) on keyboards, bass, and backing vocals, and Paul Banwatt on drums. They have released four albums and are signed to Paper Bag Records in Canada and Saddle Creek Records internationally. In 2011 they were nominated for a Polaris Music Prize.

The snow squall cover art for Canadian indie rock trio the Rural Alberta Advantage's sophomore effort, while skillfully echoing the opening scene of Fargo, perfectly sums up the spirited, shiftless, and heartfelt ten tracks contained within. It’s like they took 2009’s Hometowns, stuffed it in a snow globe, and shook it mercilessly. More confident, explosive, and produced than their lovable but ultimately flat-sounding debut, the aptly named Departing finds the trio ditching the living room scene for the road, carving out a solid collection of fiery, understated, nostalgia-laced indie pop.

The Rural Alberta Advantage follow up in a big way with a record to remind everyone why they fell in love with this band in the first place. Despite lacking some of the youthful, aggressive energy found in Hometowns on such feverish tracks as "The Dethbridge in Lethbridge" and "Luciana", Departing still stands as a great second-go from a band that garnered so much attention for their immediately lovable debut. With their second record, the RAA make minor changes in their sound without losing the charm that accumulated them such appraisal in the first place.
