Mary Black (born 23 May 1955) is an Irish folk singer. Mary Black Sings Jimmy MacCarthy" album release. Cover photo and quote. There is alchemy and sorcery in the extraordinary way that Mary Black has found her path into Jimmy's songs - her ability to inhabit the songs, to sense their interior dimensions, to explore and to open out their deepest mysteries, is uncanny, heartening, a kind of active magic. She brings a lifetime of study, a profound and wise mix of craft and intuition, to every song she sings, but when it comes to her versions of MacCarthy's work she seems to move into another dimension.

Shine was a 1997 Mary Black album, where she abandons her usual sound and production. Then album was recorded in Los Angeles, California, United States, with a combination of local session musicians and members of her Irish band. On production was Larry Klein (who had worked with Peter Gabriel and Joni Mitchell), and he aided in selecting songs from a new crop of songwriters. Most notably, Mary Black sang five songs written by David Gray. Shine" (David Gray) (4:38).

With her solo debut album, Mary Black established the pattern that would hold true for most of her recording career: a program of songs both old and new, some of them truly traditional and some only sounding that way, and one or two modern pop clunkers. And for misbegotten pop clunkers there is a completely embarrassing cover of John Sebastian's "Lovin' You," which seems designed mainly as an opportunity for producer Declan Sinnott to show off his considerable guitar chops, and a spare arrangement of Karla Bonoff's "Home. In the surprisingly successful category is Black's tender and gentle take on "God Bless the Child. Mary Black is not a perfect album by any means, but it's an auspicious debut overall.

Mary Black, who spent her early years performing and recording as part of the Black Family, released her eponymous solo debut in 1983. Laying a musical foundation for her succeeding.
