Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions is the second of three experimental albums of avant-garde music released by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released in May 1969 on Zapple, a sub label of Apple. It was a successor to 1968's highly controversial Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, and was followed by the Wedding Album.

Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With The Lions John Lennon/Yoko Ono Apple Records Made in Merrie England, Nov. '68. Printed and made by Garrod and Lofthouse Limited. On label: Mfd. in . 1969 Produced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono Published by Northern Songs Ltd. Published by Apple Publishing Limited (Label Side B). On inner sleeve: Side One Recorded live at Lady Mitchell Hall, Cambridge, England on March 2nd, 1969, with thanks to Anthony Barnett the producer of "A Natural Music Nothing Doing In London Concert".

John Lennon and Yoko Ono's second collaborative album consists of five tracks: all of side one is taken up by "Cambridge 1969," a live recording at Lady Mitchell Hall in Cambridge of Lennon playing an electric guitar backup to Ono's singing and screaming. Side two includes an a cappella rendering by Ono of "No Bed for Beatle John," which discusses the refusal of a hospital to give Lennon a bed so he could stay during his wife's troubled pregnancy; "Baby's Heartbeat," which is what it says it is; "Two Minutes Silence" in commemoration.

Her 1970 album Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band is a triumph, in part, because it sounds fully aware of this reality. It’s also iconic because it contains some of Lennon’s most aggressive guitar work. Opener Why hurtles from its needle-drop opening, with slide guitar swoops and febrile picking that anticipate the variety of Ono’s vocal lines. When the singer enters, she wastes no time in applying a range of approaches to her one-word lyric sheet. Long expressions full of vibrato give way to shorter exhalations, rooted in the back of the throat. Spates of shredded laughter communicate the absurdist.

TAGS: John Lennon Yoko Ono. The attic of his Kenwood home was one of John Lennon’s favourite places. Today the resultant tapes are on YouTube, but back then very few people got to hear his work in progress. Two Virgins is the soundtrack to that giddy, flirtatious night in May 1968, one consummated at dawn, the event celebrated with a selfie of the two lovers, naked and tousled. By the time of its release six months later, John and Yoko had become an inseparable item, and one disruptive of the fragile equilibrium of The Beatles. Two Virgins was, for many, a step too far.

Following Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, Life with the Lions is a focused on the frenzy of media attention Ono and Lennon’s relationship had received. It heavily features Yoko’s tremolo wailings but in contrast to Two Virgins adds in Lennon’s freeform guitar feedback as a backdrop. The name of the albums is a wry play on an old British radio program Life with the Lyons juxtaposing the media storm the couple received. It was released in 1969, the same year that The Beatles released Abbey Road and Yellow Submarine.

Anyone got a spare sleeve out there? Seems like some of the vinyls were trashed in disappointment, I will pay kindly .

Totally I feel your pain! Bought this record hot off the presses back in the summer of 1969 when I was 12! While the record is.....well different, hang on to it. Is the Zapple label silver? I was once read years ago that this record was rather pricey so your $30 investment might pay off down the road. Of course me & my friends hated the record and it was used as a prank. If someone wanted to borrow the Temps, Jimi or Miles Davis record of mine I would slip this in the sleeve! Of course when my buddy got home the phone would ring and I would answer laughing. Finally we used it as a Frisbee and broke into pieces. Not going to lay any $$ on this now but kinda wish I still had it.

Thanks. I don't listen to it, but I look at it as another gap filled in my Lennon collection, so I'll definitely be holding onto it. Thanks!

Cool, hang on to it. I think the value is way more then what this and other sites list it at. If for no other reason it is very rare John Lennon record. Not to mention you could play stump the band with your friends, no one will get it and you might win a few beers and get your initial investment back!!

despite the lack of enjoyment I have for this record, I'll definitely be hanging on to it. From the looks of it, I got a pretty good deal for $30, and yeah; the label is silver. That's hilarious, that sounds like something my friends and I would do.

So I bought this at my local record store. The store is very small and it's always a major hit or miss whenever I go. The day I got it was one of the "miss" days. I bought this record on a whim because I enjoyed John Lennon's work and never really knew about this album. Unreleased songs? How awesome.Oh how was I wrong. The first side was literally Yoko screams, and I haven't even bothered with the second half.I really should have done my research before paying 30 bucks for this record I probably will never listen to again. As far as quality goes, it's pretty decent.
  • Ielonere
that seems rather harsh given that the screaming was in reaction to yoko having the baby inside of her die. it was their way of working it out through music. if you had checked out the other side, you would be treated to john and yoko singing to themselves, the baby's actual heart beat, and also a moment of silence for john ono lennon II. it's not for everyone, but it is certainly a meaningful, heavy record
