Stephen Malkmus is the debut album by Stephen Malkmus, released on February 13, 2001 by Matador Records. Malkmus had planned to create the record by himself, or through a smaller, local label, but eventually accepted the offer Matador asked, and he released it. Pre-release promotional CDs of the album exist under the working titles Jicks and Swedish Reggae. Malkmus intended to release the album as The Jicks, but Matador insisted that the album be released under his own name.

When promo copies of Stephen Malkmus ’ eponymous 2001 solo album began to circulate, they bore the record’s working title: Swedish Reggae. It was an obvious joke that worked on two levels. There was the implicit contradiction in terms, which seemed more preposterous in a dial-up world where the internet had yet to dissolve geographic and musical boundaries; the gag was also rooted in the equally absurd notion that Stephen Malkmus would deign to make music that sounded like anyone other than himself.

Stephen Malkmus has been working with The Jicks far longer than he did with Pavement; their trick bag is more diverse than ever on Sparkle Hard. Sure, the gently melodic "Middle America" evokes Pavement circa Crooked Rain, and the crunch 'n' stomp of "Shiggy" bears hints of that band's harder side.

Sparkle Hard comes into focus slowly and stately, coalescing around crawling piano chords that soon get blown to bits by guitars - thereby offering a neat encapsulation of how this, the seventh album Stephen Malkmus has made since disbanding Pavement in 1999, walks a fine line between the familiar and the unexpected. The diversity dazzles, particularly as it's filled with elegant new accents to make familiar settings seem fresh, even when they're firmly within Malkmus' laconic wheelhouse; witness his pitch-shifted vocals on "Rattler," which give the song's robotic rhythms a woozy sway, or how the pastoral beginnings of "Kite" get blown out with psychedelic wah-wahs and rushed rhythms.

But Malkmus seems to have the musical equivalent of a Dorian Gray portrait in his attic, some mysterious trick that keeps his music vibrant and surprising.

In interviews promoting last year’s Sparkle Hard, Stephen Malkmus repeatedly mentioned that he had recorded an electronic album. As he put it in a Q&A at the Matador Records offices last fall, Every artist goes through this, and finally I di. .However, the album remained in limbo because it had inspired a lot of trepidation by the suits. The label allegedly wanted Malkmus to return from the four-year break after 2014’s Wig Out At Jagbags with something more in his wheelhouse, so he agreed to go make another guitar album with his band the Jicks. The result was Sparkle Hard, which saw.
