Dorival Caymmi (April 30, 1914, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil - August 16, 2008, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was a prominent Brazilian songwriter and singer. Should not be confused with his son, Dori Caymmi (2), who was born in 1943 and is also well-known as a writer, producer, and performer. Gabriela, cravo e canela narra o caso de amor entre o árabe Nacib e a sertaneja Gabriela e compõe uma crônica do período áureo do cacau na região de Ilhéus. Além do quadro de costumes, o livro descreve alterações profundas na vida social da Bahia dos anos 1920: a abertura do porto aos grandes navios leva à ascensão do exportador carioca Mundinho Falcão e ao declínio dos coronéis, como Ramiro Bastos.
