Gabriel Fauré - Jean Fournier, Ginette Doyen - Two Violin Sonatas download mp3 album
Jean Fournier, violin Ginette Doyen, piano. Jean Fournier (1911-2003) and his wife Ginette Doyen (1921-2002) were mainstays of the catalogues in the 1950s and 1960s. They were both especially attuned to the Gallic sensitivity necessary to convey native chamber music, and both were fine Fauré players. They recorded both sonatas between April and May 1952 on a mono Westminster (and Vega) LP. The Thibaud-Cortot 78 recording of the First Sonata was, I suspect, still just about gettable, but for those with up-to-date equipment competition loomed by way of the Bobesco-Gentry team and that of Soriano and Tagliaferro. More suave, international names featured Heifetz and Bay, and Elman and Millman.

The Fournier-Doyen Fauré Sonatas have been coupled with Schmitt’s sonata by Forgotten Records to fine effect, for example. The sonatas seem to have been recorded in three batches over the period in question. Each performance is finely characterised, with buoyant ensemble. The variations of the earliest sonata are as well judged as the Kreutzer’s far more famous variations, and there is a similar sense of rhythmic vivacity but flexibility. The Spring is nicely paced and the rhythmic games in its Scherzo are pointed and not glided over. Fournier’s vibrato remains eloquently graded in the slow movement as it does in a lovely performance of the O. 0 N. sonata. Here and in O. interplay is lithe and deft, Doyen contributing strongly to the success of the individual and collective performances.
Jean Doyen (8 March 1907 – 21 April 1982) was a French classical pianist, pedagogue and composer. Doyen is best known for his interpretations of 19th and 20th century French music, notably in the works of Gabriel Pierné, Reynaldo Hahn and Vincent d'Indy and is considered one of the great interpreters of this repertoire and above all, of Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré. However, there is no relationship with Ginette Doyen (alias Geneviève Fournier, 1921-2002), married to and musical collaborator of violinist Jean Fournier, himself Pierre Fournier's brother. Chopin's 14 waltzes (1956, LP Fontana 70. 09, Philips A77405L).
It features two of the three album sets that Columbia issued, the third being the Schubert B-flat Piano Trio with Myra Hess and Jelly D’Aranyi (Pristine PACM 083). The ’cello Sonatas are probably less familiar to most people than those for piano or for violin, but they form nevertheless a distinguished series in which the A major stands out much as the Kreutzer does among those for violin or the Appassionata among the piano works. It is, that is to say, a good example of Beethoven’s middle period at its best, and as it is the middle period that has found most favour with the general public Columbia have done wisely in selecting it for recording.
