Rilling , Newman , Sebestyen , Foss , Kehr ‎– Bach Is Best. Label: Turnabout ‎– TV 34804. Harpsichord – János Sebestyén. A5. Piano Concerto No. 1 In D Minor, S. 1052 - First Movement: Allegro. Orchestra – Jerusalem Symphony Chamber Orchestra Piano, Conductor – Lukas Foss.

Rilling was the first conductor to ever record the complete Bach cantatas and still, 25 years after they were first released in celebration of the Bach tercentennial in 1985, they remain the standard by which all other interpretations are judged. Timeless performances featuring many of Europe's finest singers at the height of their careers!

For me, Bach is a seer, a wise man, a beacon along the path. For conductor Helmuth Rilling - who has recorded more music by Bach than most - his genius had a more earthly foundation. He was the great consolidator, summing up the best of what had gone before, refining the best ideas of his own time. The true extent of Bach's genius, Rilling believes, is only now becoming apparent. It's not enough, he says, simply to look at Bach's own work alone. He's the teacher par excellence.

And indeed, when they published a 10 Best Bach Recordings list early last year, they topped it in such a ridiculous way that it needed soft rebutting which I hope to provide hereby. Karl Richter I & II (Archiv, both) and Helmut Rilling (Hänssler) would be far up my list, as would be a recent recording with Riccardo Chailly and the brawny Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (Decca).
