Morton David Alpern (March 23, 1922 – February 12, 2018), better known as Marty Allen, was an American comedian, actor, and philanthropist. He worked as a comedy headliner in nightclubs, as a dramatic actor in television roles, and was once called "The Darling of Daytime TV". He also appeared in films, notably the 1966 spy comedy The Last of the Secret Agents? During his comedy career, Allen also toured military hospitals, performed for veterans, and for active military personnel.
Trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen's next-to-last album (which has not yet been reissued on CD) is a spirited but slightly disappointing effort. Although Allen plays well enough, unfortunately he sings on all 11 selections (recorded live) and his vocal refrains are rather run-of-the-mill. He was getting a lot of publicity at the time for his advanced trumpet solos, but his outbursts on trumpet are less memorable than expected, and the inclusion of the songs "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" and "Feeling Good" drag down the album's quality.
I can't figure Marty Allen & Steve Rossi out. I have a couple of their comedy albums, saw them many times on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW way back when, and some months ago viewed their spot on one of the weeks in Feb. '64 when the Beatles were headlining that program. Allen specifically is NOT funny. That "Hello dere!" schtick of his was tedious. For their 1965 red label MERCURY album ALLEN & ROSSI MEET THE GREAT SOCIETY (MG2105/SR6105), Marty abandons this ubiquitous greeting to even worse effect
