Scott was the début solo album by Scott Walker, originally released in the United Kingdom on Philips Records in 1967. The album received both strong commercial success as well as critical praise, hitting No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart. This album, alongside Scott 2, features Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" recording technique, Scott 3 and Scott 4 however do not.

Phillips quickly released Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel, and then the pointless The Best Of Scott Walker, a hotchpotch of originals and MOR/Brel covers. But Cope’s influence lingered, and Virgin Records funded, Walker’s first new solo album in ten years, and the first with his own songs in 14. It expanded the elliptical mood and taut drama of his Nite Flights songs, with some (relatively pared-back) orchestral arrangements, and a comparably rich feel to those seeking some 1967-70 consolation.

Walker additionally performed five Brel songs on his television series including "Alone"; another Brel/Shuman composition. None of these live recordings were released on the accompanying soundtrack. Mathilde", "My Death" and "Amsterdam" are from Scott (1967). Jackie", "Next" and "The Girls and the Dogs" are from Scott 2 (1968). Sons Of", "Funeral Tango" and "If You Go Away" are from Scott 3 (1969)

Like Brel, Walker brought a measure of romanticism to the mundane and set his poetic lyrics within arrangements that fleshed out the emotional range of his human comedies, much like miniature soundtracks. Working with Mort Shuman's accomplished translations (and one more schmaltzy version by Rod McKuen), Walker captures the spirit and the many moods of Brel's originals, from quiet pathos ("If You Go Away") to dark humor ("Funeral Tango") to exuberant cynicism ("Jackie") to unbridled euphoria ("Mathilde"), in the process infusing the songs with.

The album brings all the Brel material that Walker covered on record. Walker transformed the numbers into unique, dramatic experiences. Each of the tracks is a gem, but three stand out: the grandiose, swirling waitz of "Amsterdam", the powerful "My Death", and "Next"
