Endogenous pacemakers are internal ‘biological clocks’ that manage our rhythms. The main pacemaker in mammals is the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), a cluster of nerve cells located in the hypothalamus. This detects sunlight and alters our sleep- wake cycle when needed putting the biological rhythm in time with the environment. The ‘cave man’ study by Micheal Siffre in 1975 supported the presence of endogenous pacemakers or biological ‘clocks’ in our sleep-wake cycle as his circadian rhythm returned to its normal 24 hour cycle without the aid of any external cues (zeitgebers). However despite this study showing the importance of endogenous factors it can be criticised for lacking validity as it is a case study and thus only describes the behaviour of one individual. It can therefore not be generalised to the wider population.

Biological Rhythms are endogenous as well as exogenous, I mean they are regulated by intrinsic factors and external environment as well. Example: The biological clock that maps the light and dark during 24 hours recognizes when to wake the organism up and when to make it o to bed, but we can override it and stay awake all night, but our intrinsic factors will soon sinal us about being tired and we will eventually sleep throughout the day. If we stay a room where we are unable to map the light and dark patterns as in solitary confinement for a long period.
