Yo La Tengo reunited with Dave Schramm in 1990 to record Fakebook, an album of mostly acoustic tunes, including covers of Cat Stevens, Gene Clark, The Kinks, Daniel Johnston, among others, with five original songs by the band themselves, including an acoustic version of Barnaby Hardly Working. Again produced by Gene Holder, the album's folk sound was a change of pace for the band. Their scores for these four films were collected on the 2008 compilation They Shoot, We Score. Their eleventh LP, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, was released in 2006 to universal acclaim. Informed by their soundtrack work, the arrangements included more strings and horns than any of the band's previous albums.

Yo La Tengo have always sounded more in love with music than pretty much any indie band going, and they've let their diverse interests settle into a comfortable and productive place conducive to growing good songs. Everything they've done well in the past is found on here somewhere, even a couple of the gossamer mood pieces that previously threatened to smother their career like a damp wool blanket sounds like a double album in the 70s sense, a chance for the band to stretch out and try everything in their repertoire even if the end result is a little shaggy. Really, this kind of committed and sincere musical sampler is the most natural place in the world for Yo La Tengo to be, but it wasn't clear if they'd ever find their way back.

Yo La Tengo have learned quite a bit over their three decade-spanning career, exploring every crevice of alternative rock and making it over in their own image. I Am Not Afraid of You was three years in the making and its 15 tracks feature all the intensity and variety that longtime fans have come to count on. The album is bookended by two feedback fueled jams that remain melodic and focused, rooted in the mechanical beats of the Velvet Underground and stretching out from there.

Deeply in thrall to the Velvet Underground and their disciples (Joy Division, Sonic Youth, 1970s Brian Eno), Yo La Tengo depart from their influences only to concoct the kind of cult-pop pastiche that raises a chuckle in second-hand record shops. This is their 13th full-length album, excluding side projects, and it returns to their old, more varied style, which was abandoned for the sustained reverie of 2003's Summer Sun, many fans' favourite

Looking at Yo La Tengo's previous couple records to this one, while they were critically acclaimed and generally well received by audiences, I found the records lacking something and it seemed the band was getting mature (and by mature, I mean old). This album is as good as I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. It's a wonderful album with so many great songs. is like a road trip with a couple too many detours. With each listen I find myself tuning out earlier.

I’m not afraid of you and I will beat your ass and you’re not. During the 2007 Writers Guild strike, both 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live performed live shows at the UCB Theater to support and raise money for the strikers. Michael Cera hosted the Saturday Night Live episode, which featured the entire cast save for Maya Rudolph, not to mention alumni Rachel Dratch and Horatio Sanz, and Norah Jones. We were the musical guest, playing acoustic versions of Little Honda and Mr. Tough. Previous PostPrevious. A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork
