Sebastian wrote this as the theme song for the ABC TV series Welcome Back, Kotter, staring Gabe Kaplan as a teacher who returns to his old school and is placed in a class of misfits known as The Sweathogs. Sebastian said that this song has a particularly warm spot in his heart, because "it bought me my house. In his first attempt, Sebastian tried writing a song with "Kotter" in the title, but the only word he could rhyme with that was "otter," so he scrapped that idea. Steve Barri produced this song with Sebastian. Barri had lots of success with TV theme songs: He co-wrote "Secret Agent Man" (for the series Secret Agent) and co-produced "Theme From . " which was a hit 10 weeks before this song hit the top spot. The Rapper Mase sampled.

Welcome Back is an album by American singer/songwriter John Sebastian, released in 1976 (see 1976 in music). It reached number 79 on The Billboard 200 chart. Two singles were released from the album with the title song "Welcome Back" reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. It also reached number 93 on the Country Singles chart.

Welcome Back is an album by American singer/songwriter John Sebastian, released in 1976 (see 1976 in music). Following the commercial failure of his 1974 album Tarzana Kid, Sebastian owed one more record on his contract with Reprise Records. With his contract fulfilled, Reprise dropped him from the label. It would be seventeen years before Sebastian's next studio album was released.
