Brand New Second Hand. Released May 23, 1999. Brand New Second Hand Tracklist. 2. Dem Phonies (Ft. IG Culture) Lyrics. Many Roots Manuva fans would consider this ( my old dub cruff shit as he later described it), his greatest album. From the political critiques of ‘Juggle Tings Proper’ or ‘Soul Decay’, to the narratives of ‘Inna’ and ‘Strange Behaviour’ there is little in the way of filler.

Producer – Mr Manuva (tracks: A1, B1, B4, D2), Roots Manuva (tracks: A2, A3, C3, D3). Written-By – Rodney Smith. 모. Reissue initiated by Beatdelete. Free download code included.

Signed to experimental label Ninja Tunes, debut album Brand New Second Hand (1999) became significant because it gave UK hip hop a genuine identity, rapping about distinctly British topics rather than imitating an American sound. Its follow-up Run Come Save Me (2001) was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and produced minor hits Witness (1Hope) and Dreamy Days, before Roots went on to appear on tracks for Leftfield, Fun Lovin Criminals and Gorillaz. But along comes Roots Manuva just to really baffle my already befuddled noggin. Brand New Secondhand is as near as I think the UK is going to get to an out- and- out and credible rap album. But with one proviso: Manuva delivers his consciousness rhymes in a sort of Brixton patois. So rather than getting something as woeful as MC Tunes banging on in his finest Mancunian eloquence, you get the most intriguing and appealing voices I have heard in years. I find Roots Manuva's delivery addictive, compelling, and, above all, heartfelt.

Roots Manuva is a rapper hailing from London, England who was born on September 8th, 1972. Since debuting in 1994 he has released eight studio albums and is hailed as one of the most respected and acclaimed English rappers of all time. Born Rodney Smith in Stockwell, London, Roots Manuva's passion for music stems from walking past a sound system constructed in a local skate park when he was a child. He spent the next four years making a name for himself with solo singles and collaborations, before releasing his debut solo album Brand New Second Hand in 1999. The album was a huge critical success, with no lesser authority than The Times declaring Smith The voice of urban Britain. Smith also netted the MOBO Award for Best Hip-Hop Act in the same year, but even after all that, the best had yet to come for Smith.
