Album · 1998 · 11 Songs. Memories of Joe Macinnis/Untitled Marie Maclean/Foxie Mary. MacDonald/Untitled Jig. 4:26. 7. Bonnie Lass of Headlake/Dancing al Reels.

This album has its own particular tale of fortune, having been recorded in 1977, but rejected at the time by the notoriously shy MacLean for unspecified reasons. When Rounder was finally able to arrange for its release, an additional cut featuring MacLean and pianist Marie MacLellan, recorded in 1961, was added. Students of traditional Scottish music will find a great deal to enjoy here - aside from his wonderful fiddle playing, MacLean was a notable student of Scots music, making considerable efforts to acquire old manuscripts and numerous sources of music.

Old time fiddle is a genre of American folk music. Old time fiddle tunes" derived from European folk dance tunes such as Jig, Reel, Breakdown, Schottische, Waltz, Two Step and Polka. The fiddle may be accompanied by banjo or other instruments but are nevertheless called "fiddle tunes". The genre traces from the colonization of North America by immigrants from England, France, Germany, Ireland, and Scotland.

This new CD, Old Time Scottish Fiddle Music from Cape Breton Island was recorded in 1977, but has only recently been released. As with all of Joe's recordings, the repertoire is inspiring - a high percentage of seldom heard tunes, mostly ones interpreted from old Scottish books. Joe had one of the best libraries of old Scottish books in Cape Breton and fortunately for all of us, he was generous with his music during his lifetime. Joe MacLean and Bill Lamey circa 1950.
