Mingus at Antibes was originally issued by BYG Records under the title Charles Mingus Live With Eric Dolphy in Japan in 1974. It was recorded at a live 1960 performance at the Jazz à Juan festival at Juan-les-Pins by jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus; and was re-released by Atlantic Records in more complete form as a double album with the title Mingus In Antibes in the United States in 1976.

During 1960, bassist Charles Mingus led one of his finest bands, a pianoless quartet with Eric Dolphy (on alto, flute, and bass clarinet), trumpeter Ted Curson, and drummer Dannie Richmond. For this live concert, the band is augmented by the great tenor Booker Ervin for some stirring music. All of the music is memorable: "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting," "Prayer for Passive Resistance," "What Love," "Folk Forms No. 1," and "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul.

Album · 1960 · 6 Songs. In 1960, not long after the release of his epochal Mingus Ah Um, bassist/composer Charles Mingus played one of Europe’s most venerable jazz festivals. The recording didn’t see release, however, until the mid-’70s, and what it documented was a band for the ages. The quartet played exploratory versions of Mingus evergreens, including the bluesy, politically charged Prayer for Passive Resistance. Innovative reedist Eric Dolphy subs for Booker Ervin on What Love, and Bud Powell, king of bebop pianists, joins for the standard I’ll Remember April. Mingus At Antibes (Live) Charles Mingus.

Listening to this album, I wonder if I would have been able to prevent myself from fainting had I been present at Juan les Pins seeing Mingus live. You see, the urgency, the virtuosity, the volatile elements that Mingus so effortlessly combines here make for some intense and challenging listening. And, when I say virtuosity, I mean it in both ways - individually and collectively.
