Though some have tried to place BUCKSHOT LEFONQUE somewhere between Jazz and Hip Hop, Marsalis himself rejects their efforts. He won a Grammy in 1993 for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group, for his album I Heard You Twice the First Time, and another in 1994 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Barcelona Mona," a single he recorded with Bruce Hornsby for the Olympics in Spain four years ago. In 1995 he has been nominated for yet another Grammy, in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Performance, for his stirring rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," series, "Baseball.

Buckshot LeFonque was a musical group project of Branford Marsalis. The name Buckshot LeFonque was a pseudonym used by jazz saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley for contractual reasons on the album Here Comes Louis Smith (1958). After playing with Sting, Miles Davis and other artists, Marsalis founded this band to create a new sound by merging classic jazz with rock, pop, R&B and hip-hop influences.

Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample). 1. 30. Ladies & Gentlemen, Presenting. Truly amazing recording, the first outing of Branford Marsalis and a heavy-hitting cast of rappers, R&B singers, and DJ's, this album is a musical masterpiece. Why the Cage Bird Sings" is an incredible song, in which Branford took a recoding of Maya Angelou speaking her poem, which I believe she one a Pulitzer for, and builds this incredible melody around it.

Buckshot LeFonque, Branford Marsalis. Despite the occasional lapse into aimless fusion, Buckshot LeFonque's second album, Music Evolution, is a stronger, more confident record than their eponymous debut, capturing Branford Marsalis and his band - including cameos by David Sanborn, Guru, and Laurence Fishburne - finding a vibrant, exciting common ground between hard bop and hip-hop.
