The St Luke Passion (full title: Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam, or the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to St Luke) is a work for chorus and orchestra written in 1966 by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, which, considered within the context of the officially atheistic Polish People's Republic and other Eastern Bloc countries, makes its potentially subversive subject matter even that much more remarkable

Krzysztof Penderecki completed Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam - St Luke's Passion, arguably his most famous piece of music, in 1965, after two years' work. Krzysztof Penderecki's Passion had been commissioned by the German radio Westdeutscher Rundfunk for the 700th anniversary of the Münster cathedral, and it was inside the cathedral that it had its premiere, under Henryk Czyż, on 30th March 1966.

Orch & Choir, Henryk Czyz, Polskie Nagrania XL 0325-0326. Taken on December 9, 2014.

Notes

This is a German reissue with golden labels giving only the original release date--1967. Prior entry claim this has an A4 booklet, but my copy is a 12-page 30 cm x 30 cm booklet on high-quality linen paper. It is possible this design was released as early as 1973, as some have claimed. My copy was purchased between 1981 and 1984. Cover references to the Edison Prize and the Deutscher Schall Platten Preis may help date it more precisely.
