Lynn Harrell/Seattle Symphony/Gerard Schwarz (Artek). Ivan Monighetti/Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra/Vladimir Valek (Le Chant du Monde). Rafał Kwiatkowski/Polish Radio Orchestra (Polska Orkiestra Radiowa )/Wojciech Rajski (Dux). Dmitry Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1, program notes by Barbara Heninger for the Redwood Symphony. Listening guide based on Heinrich Schiff's recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

As is frequently the case with Shostakovich, the First Cello Concerto and Ninth Symphonies heard on this Artek album provide sharp contrast. On the one hand, there's the despondent, oppressive, even aggressive Cello Concerto. The Seattle Symphony, conducted by Gerard Schwarz, and cellist Lynn Harrell provide technically brilliant performances of both works, which bring contrast to the fore.

The Ninth Symphony was originally supposed to be a grandiose work, and Shostakovich faced a lot of pressure to express the drama and power of the Russian people in a symphony equal to Beethoven's Ninth. In the end he dropped that plan and went for this light and airy work. The Seattle Symphony under Schwarz fully delivers on the Shostakovich 9, and although I had not heard any of the Liadov works before I am pleased at how perfectly they complete this program. You just can't go wrong with this recording. This is a great deal on a great album.
