לוים The Livites - הלוים The Levites (CD, Album).
Levites are the descendants of the Tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Levites are integrated in Jewish and Samaritan communities, but keep a distinct status. There are estimated 300,000 Levites among Ashkenazi Jewish communities. In return, the landed tribes were expected to give tithe to support the Levites, particularly the tithe known as the 'Maaser Rishon'. The Kohanim, a subset of the Levites, were the priests, who performed the work of holiness in the Temple. The Levites, referring to those who were not Kohanim, were specifically assigned to. singing and/or playing music in the Temple.
The Levites shall be mine, Berean Study Bible Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in place of every firstborn Israelite from the womb. The Levites belong to Me, New American Standard Bible "Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine. The Levites הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (hal·wî·yim) Article Noun - proper - masculine singular Strong's Hebrew 3881: Levites - descendant of Levi. belong וְהָ֥יוּ (wə·hā·yū) Conjunctive waw Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common plural Strong's Hebrew 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, be. to Me, לִ֖י (lî) Preposition first person common singular Strong's Hebrew.
I believe that הַלְוִיִּם is in adjectival form, so that the phrase translated in English would be something like "Levitical priests". This is how the JPS Tanakh translates it, as well as how Rashi explains it (in English translation): the Levitic kohanim: . the kohanim, who are descended from the tribe of Levi. and to the judge who will be in those days. So the verse seems to be referring to two entities: the Levitical priests (KJV: the priests the Levites) and the judge.
Why the Levites were Chosen According to the biblical narrative, God chose the Levites to be cultic officials during the wilderness period. The exact reason for this is unclear. Deuteronomy states that the choice was made at Mount Horeb, seemingly after the Golden Calf incident:

14 Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine. ו וְאַחֲרֵי-כֵן יָבֹאוּ הַלְוִיִּם, לַעֲבֹד אֶת-אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד; וְטִהַרְתָּ אֹתָם, וְהֵנַפְתָּ אֹתָם תְּנוּפָה. 15 And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tent of meeting; and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for a wave-offering.
