Aaliyah is the self-titled third and final studio album by American R&B singer Aaliyah. It was released on July 7, 2001, by Blackground Records and Virgin Records America. Aaliyah started to work on the album in 1998, but rescheduled its recording around her developing film career. Back & Forth" is a song written by R. Kelly for Aaliyah's debut studio album "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number "in 1994. The song was released as the album's lead single in early 1994, and later certified gold by the RIAA on June 9, 1994. It spent three weeks at number-one on the . Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart, and peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first single to hit the top-ten.
Back and Forth was the debut single from late teen R&B sensation Aaliyah. The bass-heavy midtempo song featured unison female background vocals and rapped male chants that combined for a singalong-ready single. Its smooth and easy R&B sound became synonymous with summertime and 90’s party music. The song was written, produced by, and featured R&B singer R. Kelly who was still riding the wave of his wildly successful and sexually overt 1993 album 12 Play. Back & Forth was released May 10, 1994 and would eventually knock Kelly’s own Your Body’s Callin' out of the spot. Before the year’s end, Aaliyah (then aged 15) and Kelly (age 27) would be embroiled in a controversy surrounding an alleged underage marriage. The controversy lent a strangely charged feel to her mature-leaning debut album auspiciously titled Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.
