Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra, which he led from 1923 until his death over a career spanning more than fifty years. Duke Ellington was very productive during 1940 and this reissue has most of his best recordings for Victor (leaving out almost all of the vocals) including "Jack the Bear," two versions of "Ko-Ko," "Concerto for Cootie," "Cotton Tail," "All Too Soon" and "In a Mellotone.

The album was released on three LP records by Book-of-the Month Records as Duke Ellington at Fargo, 1940. The record sides were sequenced for use with a record changer (1/6, 2/5, 3/4). This version was also issued with different cover art as Duke Ellington at Fargo, 1940 Live by Jazz Heritage. Since the album was released in 1978, it has been reissued in varying combinations with different album covers. In 1990, the first digital release of the concert (on two CDs) was by Vintage Jazz.
