Stokowski & The Symphony of the Air: Shostakovich, Respighi, Khachaturian, Bloch, Frescobaldi, Palestrina, Gabrieli, & Cesti. He performs with big tone and romantic fervor, and the orchestra under Stokowski plays with fire, a few uncertain entries and sometimes almost overbearing presence, some of the solo wind interventions sounding forte rather than the indicated piano. The Stokowski transcriptions of pieces by four Italian Renaissance composers make them into full-blooded romantic pieces, evoking, especially in Cesti and Palestrina, Barber's adagio or even Albinoni's spurious adagio as it was customarily performed in the fifties and sixties. The effect is somewhat staid, but still deeply moving.
The group identified as the "Leopold Stokowski Symphony Orchestra" was the Symphony of the Air, the reorganized NBC Symphony after Toscanini retired; Stokowski recorded both under that name and his own. There are also some guest situations with the ORTF Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and even the Berlin Philharmonic, and the front tip of his work in Houston, the rest being captured by Belock Labs (. In sum, during these years Stokowski was still a name, but was not entirely in control of his destiny as far as recording was concerned; Stokowski: The Maverick Conductor is partly a collection of curios, a grab bag of dates he was able to secure in those years.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was an Italian composer who belonged to the Renaissance period. Majority of his compositions were done for the sacred music genre. This renowned 16th century representative of Roman School of musical composition had great influence on the development of church music. He was among those fist Italian musicians to work on sacred music, especially, in a time when sacred music in Italy was mostly handled by the musicians from the Low Countries like France, Spain or Potugal. Palestrina was greatly influenced by Northern European polyphony style.
From 1947 to 1953, "Leopold Stokowski and His Symphony Orchestra" made about 100 recordings for RCA Victor. Conventional wisdom has it that this orchestra was a mix of players from the New York Philharmonic, the NBC Symphony, and local freelancers. That turns out to be very misleading. Like Sir Thomas Beecham, he founded and conducted new orchestras at every turn: the All-American Youth Orchestra, the New York City Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, and eventually the American Symphony Orchestra. Stokowski and Greta Garbo featured in a 1938 movie magazine. He needed a major orchestra of his own, and he seemed to get it when Toscanini left the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1941, but the old maestro returned in 1944.
